FOMO – Fear of Missing Out

http://renatamotyka.com

Modern mankind suffers from FOMO - Fear of Missing Out, which is the fear that something will pass us by. This is the most common syndrome among social media users who are afraid that something important will escape their attention irretrievably. Scrolling through Facebook and Instagram, or analyzing the profiles of (our) friends, we find ourselves in a permanent state of vigilance and feeling of missing something associated with our personal failure. For fear of losing the opportunity, we grasp everything. When we take another opportunity to improve our online social status or meet new people, we do so at the expense of time we could devote to productive activities and more valuable relationships.

In my work I decided to use the phone as an important medium in the context of shaping FOMO. It is a carrier of image and information, which significantly affects the perception of reality. In the artistic installation I am presenting, I want to reverse the vector of motivation of FOMO. In this case, the phone, as a source of fear and tension, goes into a state of rest - representing nature, builds an artificial horizon in the virtual and electronic world. The installation has an ephemeral character, it is built of old, unused phones which, in the eyes of their owners, have become unnecessary electrowaste.
